Supercomputing and Modeling for the Human Brain

The Joint Lab (JL) Supercomputing and Modeling for the Human Brain (SMHB) addresses key issues regarding the analysis, simulation and visualization of extremely large and complex data sets derived from the human brain, and thus will contribute to solving the scientific, societal and technical challenges of the digitization. The highly interdisciplinary character of the SMHB will leverage synergy potentials at the interface of supercomputing, machine learning, neuroscience and brain medicine.

Computing the Brain

We build 3D models of the human brain at the level of individual cells and nerve fibers by processing image data in the range of Terabyte to Petabyte. This is only possible by developing complex distributed workflows on the Supercomputing systems in Jülich.



The Jülich Supercomputing Centre operates computers of the highest performance class. In the SMHB we co-design modular supercomputing, interactive supercomputing and scalable data infrastructures towards exascale through use cases from neuroscience.

Method Development

We develop scalable methods for data analytics and simulation to cope with the enormous size and multiscale complexity of the brain. Productive loops between theory, simulation, data analytics and empirical neuroscience are created.
