Sample preparation and pre-characterization are prerequisites when undertaking fundamental research on electronic and magnetic properties in polycrystalline materials, thin films, and single crystals. At JCNS 2, we have varieties of facilities to prepare single, polycrystalline samples and thin films.

In-house X-ray facilities

In-house X-ray facilities are essential for characterizing polycrystalline materials, thin films, single crystals, and nano-particles. At JCNS 2, we have a few single crystal and powder diffractometers, reflectometers, and high resolution diffractometer for GISAXS instruments.

PPMS, PPMS DynaCool and MPMS

After the successful growth of the materials, it is necessary to macroscopically characterize the samples. JCNS-2 is equipped with powerful state-of the-art instruments (MPMS, PPMS and PPMS DynaCool) to characterize samples with respect to the various physical properties as a function of magnetic, electric fields and temperature.

Atomic Force Microscopy

For thin film and substrate surface characterization, atomic force microscopy is an invaluable technique. We are equipped with an Agilent 5400 AFM/SPM, a versatile and easy-to-use scanning probe microscope.

Neutron scattering facility at FRMII, Garching

Neutron Scattering

The main strength of JCNS 2 is the research of quantum materials using various neutron scattering instruments at large-scale facilities. JCNS 2 has designed and constructed various instruments at the large scale facilities.

High Brilliance Neutron Source

The project of a high brilliance accelerator-based neutron source HBS develops a unique infrastructure for neutron analysis available to multitude of scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, geology, materials and engineering science. The HBS will utilize a low energy high current proton accelerator offering high power pulsed proton beams to a compact target producing sufficient neutrons for science as well as industry.
