The JARA Institute "Brain structure function relationships: Decoding the human brain at systemic levels" (JARA-BRAIN Institute [JBI] 1) is a joint institute of RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich as part of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA). On the Jülich side, it is a subinstitute of the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine and on the Aachen side, an institute of the Medical Faculty with no involvement in patient care. The aim of the institute is translational brain research, especially with the method of computational neuroscience. In particular, it is intended to develop a consistent, cross-scale model of brain function and dysfunction from the level of the individual neuron to the entire brain. Standardized protocols on all scales are being developed for this purpose. The aim is to gain a better understanding of function and dysfunction in mentally ill patients and to derive and test biologically valid models of neuropsychiatric diseases from these in the institute and to offer them perspectively as a starting point for diagnostic measures and therapeutic innovations.
