IKP-2: Experimental Hadron Dynamics

Research topics

One major research topic of IKP-2 is precision experiments with polarized proton and deuteron beams in storage rings. One key project deals with the search for permanent electric dipole moments (EDM) of charged hadrons (JEDI), which - if they exist - could provide an answer to the question why there is mostly matter in the universe, although the same amount of matter and antimatter should have been produced shortly after the Big Bang. The question of the matter-antimatter imbalance is also addressed by the TRIC experiment, which is investigating time-reversal invariance in proton-proton collisions. In addition, in November 2015, Prof. Livia Ludhova was enrolled within the HGF recruiting initiative as a head of the neutrino physics group.

The hadron physics experiments at the internal detector systems ANKE und WASA have been finished successfully at the end of the previous funding period. Here, the focus is on data analysis. The scientific results concerning hadron physics at COSY have been summarized in an review article.

Prof. Hans Ströher, director at Jülich’s Nuclear Physics Institute (IKP), was awarded two subsequent Advanced Grants by the European Research Council (ERC) in 2010 and 2016. The ERC is thus funding Ströher’s research into finding the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the elementary building blocks of matter – and therefore the very foundation of our universe’s existence.
