Earth System Science at JSC

JSC supports Earth System Model (ESM) development as one key supercomputer application with large societal relevance. ESMs are challenging even the biggest HPC systems (due to their great needs for computational capacity, storage and interconnection bandwidth) and they are challenged by the disruptive changes in HPC architectures, which require novel and complex programming models. ESM activities at JSC seek to bridge between the demands of ESM scientists and the pioneers of novel exascale HPC technology. We are providing high-level support to the scientific community and develop new solutions with scientific and technical insight.

Simulation & Data Laboratory Climate Science (SDLCS)

The SDL Climate Science is tasked with bridging the modelling communities to the HPC infrastructure. Independent research in the fields of remote sensing, and atmospheric transport and chemistry modelling keeps the SDL team members closely connected to the domain sciences and facilitates the transfer of the HPC-related expertise to the ESM communities.

The SDL supports ESM users in porting, optimizing, and modularizing their codes to enhance performance on recent (GPU) and upcoming (exascale) HPC-technologies. Establishing efficient workflows and handling large data is inseparably tied to these challenges.

Simulation & Data Laboratory Terrestrial Systems (SDLTS)

The SDLTS is concerned with developing and enabling computational models and tools for integrated simulation of mass, momentum and energy transfer processes between land, water and the atmosphere. At the core of SDLTS’s objectives is harnessing and transferring expertise in High-Performance Computing to the ESM community. Additional key aspects include software sustainability, performance-portability, and exascale-readiness.

SDLTS also provides support for HPC-enabled computing to modellers in the domains of hydrology, land surface modelling and ecology.

Research Group Earth System Data Exploration (ESDE)

The ESDE group explores the use of state-of-the-art deep learning methods for analysing and forecasting atmospheric data. Its thematic focus is on air quality and weather.

To satisfy the huge data needs of deep learning, but also out of genuine curiosity, the group works with others to develop new big data solutions with the objective to enhance FAIRness of access to Earth system data on HPC systems, i.e. in particular ESM output and worldwide air quality data. ESDE assists scientists who want to analyze such data.

Joint Lab Exascale Earth System Modelling (JL ExaESM)

The JL ExaESM addresses code and workflow scalability issues for Earth System Models with the goal to allow climate scientists to make full use of upcoming exascale computing capacity. While the JL ExaESM is currently in preparation, a pilot project (PL ExaESM) has been ongoing since 2019.
