Application Support

UNICORE has traditionally been strong in supporting application integration with application specific plugins. These applications can be embedded in workflows that link multiple applications and alleviate the overhead  to manually copy and transfer data among workflow tasks for the user. Workflows can be shared among researchers, thus reducing overall development effort. It is possible to integrate UNICORE with external workflow engines such as Taverna [1], reaching out to additional users and including their communities. Conversely, the UNICORE workflow engine has been integrated with the UIMA-HPC tool chain to model data mining workflows for chemical patent mining [2]. Apart from that, workflow templates can be exported and deployed as web-based parametric workflows [3] to be used by scientists. This allows for expert users to design workflows and then share them with others to only execute them. Finally, execution environments can modify the way an application is executed at a particular resource [4,5].

Application Support

Being able to define virtual environments gives users much more flexibility. A recent approach has been to distribute components such as workflow engines in virtualized environments. This can be done for load balancing purposes or to even allow a large number of workflows to be processed in parallel. At the same time, the workflows may be comprised of traditional batch jobs, leading to a hybrid approach of using traditional and virtualized environments in conjunction.

As the complexity of Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCIs) increases with the introduction of virtual infrastructure components, users gain more control over infrastructure assets that they had merely been able to use before. This vastly increases user's flexibility to setup distributed applications, tailoring the environments to their needs. Users can benefit from consultancy in how to best setup their applications and when to use which of the virtualized assets of an infrastructure. We support their applications and make them ready to make the best use of the DCIs.
