Inhalt:Recent work is presented on two quite distinct areas of kinetic plasma modelling. First, the plasma creation process itself, an ionization-induced 'avalanche' is considered using a first-principles approach based on our mesh-free electrostatic tree algorithm (PEPC). Benchmarking of this model has been made for the well-known Townsend avalanche [1] and first results for ITER-sized toroidal vessels will be presented. The second part of the talk will focus on modelling of laser-based particle and radiation sources of relevance to the freshly inaugurated JuSPARC facility at FZJ. Recently published work using the open-source particle-in-cell code EPOCH will be shown, including betatron [2] and high-harmonic radiation [3] sources, as well as a new scheme for producing polarized proton beams at GeV energies [4].
