At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Techno-Economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3), we conduct research into how a sustainable energy system can be achieved and what it might look like. To this end, we develop a wide range of highly complex and detailed energy system models that we utilize to assess local-to-global energy systems in an integrated manner. Thereby, we aim to provide the best possible knowledge-based support for the implementation of the clean energy transition.

We are looking to recruit a

Group leader – Infrastructure and sector coupling for clean energy transition

Your Job:

Support us in providing orientation knowledge for politics, industry, and society for the success of the energy transition by joining our team in the topic area infrastructures and energy systems on the way to climate neutrality. Your tasks will include:

  • Analyzing energy infrastructures at all scales being the backbone of a successful energy transition
  • Development and implementation of new methods and models to assess the transport and distribution of electricity, gas, hydrogen, heat and additional options
  • Modeling and analysis of an integrated grid development approaches and identification of infrastructure pathways towards greenhouse gas neutrality.
  • Develop innovative approaches for dealing with data gaps and different data qualities as a cornerstone for robust models
  • Conducting scientific studies on energy infrastructures and energy systems.
  • Developing research questions and answering them within your own group
  • Supervision of students and doctoral candidates
  • Acquisition and management of research projects
  • Representation of the institute in national and international networks
  • Presentation of your research results at international conferences as well as publication in high impact journals

Your Profile:

  • Above-average university degree (Master) in engineering (energy technology, process engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering), physics or a comparable course of study as well as a doctorate in the field of energy system modeling.
  • Experience in modeling and analysis of infrastructure and sector coupling
  • Experience in leading employees, PhD students and students
  • Independent, target-oriented, and strategic working style
  • Strong social and communication skills to lead and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
  • Programming skills in Python
  • Fluent written and spoken English and/or German

The position is initially for a fixed term of 2 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Depending on the applicant`s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks, salary grade 14 TVöD-Bund.
