Reference number: 2021-390

In the Institute of Biological Information Processing (IBI) – department “Theoretical Physics of Living Matter” (IBI-5) – we employ theory, modeling, and simulation to study and understand the structure, self-assembly, and dynamics of complex fluids, active soft matter, and living matter -- on the basis of physical principles. We use high-performance computing techniques on the Jülich supercomputers, and combine these with analytic modeling to understand the results.

We are looking to recruit a

Postdoc in Folding of Surfaces of Elastic Gels with Finite-Element Models

Your Job:

Elastic gels that contain strain mismatches fold into three-dimensional structures. We established a new collaboration on site with the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science - Neutron Scattering and Soft Matter (JCNS-1) where folding experiments will be performed. Your goal will be to understand and quantitatively reproduce these results, and to suggest improved folding strategies. This work will employ mainly computer simulations but also some analytical modelling. Your main tasks will include:

  • Adapt the existing computer simulation code to the problem requirements
  • Perform simulations on the Jülich supercomputers
  • Analyze and interpret the results
  • Compare simulation results with experimental results from our on-site collaborators
  • Develop simple analytic models to describe and rationalize the results
  • Write scientific publications

Your Profile:

  • University degree and a PhD in physics, engineering, computer sciences or a related field. Experience with computer programming and simulation techniques is essential
  • Solid background in elasticity theory is also highly desirable
  • Special knowledge of non-linear elasticity and soft-matter physics is not required, but would be a plus
  • Good communication skills in English are necessary
  • A cooperative and structured working style

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change!

  • You will be part of a dynamic research group with excellent computational equipment, embedded in the international research environment of Forschungszentrum Jülich, which provides outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure
  • Comprehensive training courses and individual opportunities for personal and professional further development
  • Extensive company health management
  • Ideal conditions for balancing work and private life, as well as a family-friendly corporate policy
  • A large research campus with green spaces, offering the best possible means for networking with colleagues and pursuing sports alongside work
  • Full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours and 30 days of annual leave
  • Targeted services for international employees, e.g. through our International Advisory Service

We offer you an exciting and varied role in an international and interdisciplinary working environment. The position is initially for a fixed term of 1 year, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Depending on the applicant`s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks, salary grade 13 TVöD-Bund.

Forschungszentrum Jülich promotes equal opportunities and diversity in its employment relations.
