There exists a substantial gap between the computational abilities of modern computers and those of the brain. The new Peter Grünberg Institute - Neuromorphic Compute Nodes (PGI-14) aims to close this gap and develop novel computing capabilities by incorporating some of the remarkable features found in biological brains. We aim to lower the energy consumption of today’s hardware while expanding our understanding of the fundamentals of computation. Practical application areas include machine learning, intractable NP-hard problems, scientific computing, and signal processing. We utilize novel technologies such as analog memories combined with modern CMOS elements to build practical circuits and integrated chips for end-to-end demonstrations in the laboratory. The institute has close collaborations with the new Peter Grünberg Institute - Neuromorphic Software Ecosystem (PGI-15), as well as device, materials, circuit researchers and neuroscientists within other institutes at the Forschungszentrum Jülich.

We are looking to recruit a

Postdoc - Design and Implementation of Neuromorphic Associative Computing

Your Job:

There are current openings for Postdoctoral Researchers or Research Associates to develop neuromorphic circuits and architectures with associative memory capabilities for novel computing applications. In this exciting job, your tasks will include:

  • Exploring in-memory computing systems for pattern storage and recognition, memory-augmented neural networks, building off of today’s high performance deep learning.
  • Developing novel analog circuits for content addressable memories (CAMs) integrated with non-volatile technologies.
  • Working on practical problems relevant to industry and performing benchmarking comparisons to the state-of-the-art.
  • Working in a cross-disciplinary team environment, inventing, simulating, fabricating and ultimately testing next generation analog and digital hardware in the laboratory.

Your Profile:

  • Master and PhD degree in physics, electrical/electronic engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience in the analysis and simulation of analog, digital, and/or mixed-signal circuits, including Spice and related simulation tools.
  • Experience with artificial neural networks and machine learning. Exposure to algorithmic concepts, computational complexity theory, and information theory will be helpful.
  • An overall strong mathematical, computational, and engineering background is needed, but candidates from areas in biology, neuroscience, or cognitive sciences would be considered as well.
  • Experience with emerging compute and memory technologies is desired such as non-volatile memories (ReRAM, PCM, Ferro-electric, STT, Flash, etc), analog computing, and beyond CMOS logic technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team are essential.

Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Depending on the applicant`s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks, salary grade 13 or 14 TVöD-Bund.
